Partnership with the Royal Schools
Our partnership with the Royal Schools of Music
Together with our Royal Schools partners – the Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Royal Northern College of Music – we are committed to supporting the next generation of performers, teachers, leaders and ambassadors for music learning.
Our heritage and relationship today
ABRSM was set up by the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music in 1889. The Royal Northern College of Music and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland joined ABRSM as subsidiary partners in 1947, becoming full partners in 1985.
Together these Royal Schools form ABRSM’s governing body. We make annual charitable donations to support the work of the four Royal Schools and provide scholarships and bursaries to outstanding students. More than 70 scholars benefit from ABRSM funding each year.
The Royal Schools
Royal Academy of Music
The Royal Academy of Music is a constituent college of the University of London.
It was founded in 1822 and is the oldest degree-granting music school in Britain.
ABRSM’s annual donation to the Academy supports a number of individual scholars and also supports outreach projects such as ‘Open Academy’ – a programme for over 2,000 participants in schools, hospitals and respite centres throughout London. ABRSM also supports the Academy’s calendar of outstanding performances throughout the year.
Royal College of Music
The Royal College of Music in South Kensington is a world-leading music conservatoire with a prestigious history and contemporary outlook.
Founded in 1882, the RCM is home to around 800 undergraduate and postgraduate students from over 60 countries, who are taught in a dynamic and nurturing environment and leave the College to become the outstanding performers, conductors and composers of the future.
In the 2016 QS World University Rankings the RCM was ranked the top conservatoire in the UK for Performing Arts and joint third across all Performing Arts institutions worldwide.
ABRSM’s financial contribution to the RCM provides vital student support through the College’s extensive scholarships programme and its pioneering professional development hub, the Creative Careers Centre.
Royal Northern College of Music
The Royal Northern College of Music was formed in 1973 from the merger of the Royal Manchester College of Music with the Northern School of Music.
The college has, for many years, been a favoured institution for a large number of aspiring professional musicians from the UK and overseas.
ABRSM’s annual donations have enabled the RNCM to develop significant initiatives over the years that directly benefit students and enhance their employability.
Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was founded in 1845 as the Glasgow Educational Association and is Scotland's national centre of professional vocational training in performance arts.
ABRSM’s donations to RCS reap enormous rewards in terms of widening opportunities to reach the greatest number of potential conservatoire entrants.
